About three days ago all the icons on Windows Explorer disappeared. Taskbar icons, desktop icons, folder icons, thumbnail previews They can be selected and executed, but there is no visible icon. I had this once before and had to reinstall win 10 but with my loads of customisation I am reluctant to do so again. The problem arose when I tried to update drivers for the cameras. The cameras worked until I updated from 8. It was in trying to update the camera drivers that this occurred.
Worth noting that when I first did a restore it made no difference and then the restore points had disappeared. It seems as though someone with the know-how should be able to fathom the problem, one that effects explorer icons and right click properties but not the start menu. On the task bar, only the odd system icons are proper, otherwise there is a default icon. The only app icon that isn't the default is Thunderbird, but only when I open it. If I try to pin it via the start menu I get the default.
Tried all forms of Restore, Safe Mode, etc. Tried to rebuild the icon cache but it doesn't rebuild. I had made two mods to the registry for the shortcuts and undoing the one didn't work but then I remembered the second. The same change has been made to the registry but it sticks, no shortcuts and no black boxes.
